The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a young woman harboring several personalities within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four separate souls, all possessing unique fears and drives. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes show the protagonist exploring a desolate church.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can activate something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are specific to each person."
The central mechanic involves managing the persona that emerges at a particular time. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
