The complete cost will surpass one million pounds after commission are applied

A musical instrument previously owned by Albert Einstein has fetched £860,000 during a sale.

That 1894 model Zunterer is believed to have been his earliest violin and had been at first projected to achieve around £300,000 when it went on the block in South Cerney, Gloucestershire.

An additional philosophical text that the physicist presented to a colleague fetched at a price of two thousand two hundred pounds.

Each of the final bids will include an additional commission of 26.4% added on top, so that the total cost for Einstein's violin will be one million pounds.

Auctioneers think that once the commission are included, the sale may become the highest ever for a string instrument not previously owned by a performing artist or made by Stradivarius – while the prior highest sale achieved by an instrument which was likely played aboard the Titanic.

The renowned physicist was an avid violinist who started playing when he was six and continued for his entire lifetime.

One bicycle seat also belonging by the physicist remained unsold in the bidding and might get put up again.

Each of the pieces up for auction had been given to his close friend and scientist Max von Laue during late 1932.

Shortly afterwards, he departed to the US to flee the rise of antisemitism and Nazism in Germany.

Von Laue gifted them to a friend and Einstein fan, Margarete Hommrich 20 years later, and the seller was a family member that has decided to sell them.

A second violin previously belonging by Einstein, that was presented to him upon his arrival in the US in 1933, fetched at auction for over $500,000 (£370,000) in the United States back in 2018.
