A whistleblower has told an official investigation that British authorities abandoned classified equipment enabling Afghanistan's rulers to identify local individuals who worked with western forces.

Data Breach Endangers Numerous at Risk

The source, known as Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the data leak were told to change residences and switch their contact details to avoid detection from militant forces.

Lawmakers are currently examining official management of a serious breach of private information involving nearly 19,000 individuals who had asked to move to the United Kingdom to avoid militant rule.

How the Leak Was Discovered

A spreadsheet containing their personal data, comprising names, contact details and sometimes household data, was accidentally leaked by an official working at special operations center in early 2022.

The breach became known months later, when details of multiple applicants who had requested to relocate to Britain were posted on Facebook.

Many believe there's a misunderstanding that militant forces do not have comparable resources that we have,” she told the committee.

During testimony about if militant forces possessed advanced decryption, the source declared: “They have complete capability.”

Impact of the Information Leak

Preliminary research presented to the committee suggested that at least 49 relatives and colleagues of people concerned by the breach had been murdered.

A legal restriction regarding the incident was put in force in late 2023 and blocked any information about it from public disclosure until recently.

Security Recommendations

Due to legal constraints, the source and the aid group she collaborated with told Afghan families they were working with that they had “apprehensions that certain devices had been compromised”.

“We recommended that they change residence where feasible and changed their contact details. Those were the crucial data that, if authorities acquired this information, would cause identification and capture,” the source testified.

Contested Findings

Person A disputed that government assessment performed by an ex-government employee had been mistaken to state that the possession of the information by the regime was “not significantly alter an individual's existing exposure”.

“The important fact is that affected people are not standing up to the Taliban; they live secretly. Everything boils down to former occupations.”

Person A described horrific abuse experienced by at-risk Afghans, involving electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and severe beatings.

“We have had toddlers who have had bones crushed to force relatives to disclose hiding places,” she testified.
