Ireland began playing for the side in preseason this season through good mate and current Wythenshawe player Blake Norton, and the former Republic of Ireland midfielder then asked additional ex-pros, who all compete in a midweek nine-a-side game, to join in.

Ex- Senegal striker Niasse, who netted 12 scores in 65 top-flight matches for the Toffees and even now attends their matches at Goodison Park, also made his debut against the opposition - who are based in Liverpool and use an Everton training kit as their strip.

So great is the strength in depth at Wythenshawe, Niasse made his first game at full-back.

"That's a bit unusual but then, I enjoy running and just go forward - I'm not defending that much," he said.

"I tell my defender 'I'm not staying' and that I'm just going to continue attacking.

"The running is what I'm seeking. It's enjoyable."

In addition to Cisse's six goals on his first game, Ireland has scored eight in 3 appearances for the side, while George Boyd scored 5 on his first match and Lescott, a centre-half by position, notched a hat-trick in one game up front.

"Our group literally haven't ceased chatting about it - I was phoning my mother and sibling on the way home.

"The opponents were all really nice, shaking our hands after the game - it was like facing a bunch of normal fellas.

"Now we are eager for the return match."
