Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 others sustained injuries in what appears to be premeditated detonation from gas at a country home in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The blast was triggered as police and firefighters entered the property close to Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

Each of the three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female were arrested at the scene and a third person who fled following the blast was apprehended shortly later. Each of them have been taken to medical facility.

The explosion could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the area revealed the property left as a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to evict the three family members in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The leader of the Veneto region, President Zaia, stated the residence was under an eviction order due to financial obligations incurred by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to talk with the family members who had locked themselves into the property. When the officers came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the residents triggered the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Commander Papagno informed news outlets.

A gas canister had been activated, and the explosion precisely impacted our members,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also found at the residence, the Interior Minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the incident consisted of eleven more officers of the military police as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

According to the local prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

The prosecutor was convinced the explosion had occurred on a floor above the access point and told reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the incident, he said personnel had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas canisters being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors informed Italian media, noting that the trio had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto joined other government officials in paying tribute to the three officers who had died in the line of duty.
