Citizens of Israel Come together to Commemorate 24 Months Since 7 October Assault by Hamas

This Tuesday, Israelis are set to assemble across the country to mark the 24-month milestone of the 7 October attack, in which fighters affiliated with Hamas took the lives of approximately 1,200 individuals and took 251 hostages through an offensive against southern Israel.

Unofficial Memorials and Protests

Community memorials are set to take place in the small kibbutzim of southern Israel in which individuals were killed or kidnapped, and a large rally is planned in Tel Aviv to demand the release of the remaining hostages from detention by Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The state remembrance event of honoring will take place on 16 October in Israel’s national cemetery on Mount Herzl after the Jewish holiday of the Rejoicing of the Torah.

Collective Trauma and Continuing Effects

The remembrance of the shared distress of the incident from two years back – the worst singular offensive in the nation's past – still looms large throughout the nation. The photographs of those abducted remaining in custody in the coastal enclave are plastered on public transport stations across the land, and residences that were torched by militants as they raided communal settlements are left scorched and vacant.

A multitude of those who lived through the assault at the Nova musical event attended a memorial on recent Sunday with former hostages and the loved ones of the deceased.

“This angel would have been 27 today. The recollection stays with me like it was just moments past,” Ofir Dor, the father of Idan Dor lost his life during the event, said next to a tribute featuring the images of the lost.

Peace Talks

The commemoration has been overshadowed by aspirations that the conflict in Gaza could be nearing its end. Representatives from Hamas and Israel convened in the nation of Egypt on Monday where they started mediated discussions to iron out the particulars of the release of each abducted individual held in Gaza and the return of nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, as well as the initial withdrawal of Israel's military forces from the Palestinian area.

This set of talks, while still far from a deal, has generated more enthusiasm than previous negotiation attempts following the most recent truce broke down in mid-March.

Benjamin Netanyahu has stated he expects to reveal the return of those abducted “over the next few days”, while the former president has warned the group with “complete destruction” if the deal does not happen.

Civilian Demands

Some commemoration events have been converted for demonstrations to urge the administration to secure an agreement to return the captives and end the war. During a protest in the square dedicated to hostages in Tel Aviv on Saturday night, loved ones insisted the prime minister agree to Trump’s plan to conclude the conflict in Gaza.

Situation in Gaza

Within the strip, the local population are hopefully expecting to see whether a truce comes to fruition. Regardless of Trump’s demands that the nation halt airstrikes the strip in anticipation of a captive return, attacks on Gaza have continued. Gaza’s ministry of health stated at least 19 people were lost their lives due to Israeli actions in the past day, including a pair of persons seeking aid.

Tuesday will also mark the 24-month mark of the onset of the country's military operation on the coastal enclave, which has caused material and human destruction to the people living there.

In excess of 67,000 residents of Gaza have been killed and approximately 170,000 have been wounded by Israel in Gaza, according to the Gaza health ministry. At least 460 people have perished due to lack of food in Gaza, and the international top body on hunger emergencies has stated a mass starvation is unfolding in parts of the strip – a consequence of what the majority of humanitarian groups claim is an Israeli blockade on Gaza. The nation has disputed the assertion.

A UN-led examination panel, multiple organizations focused on rights and the international top group of experts on genocide have said the country has committed genocide in Gaza throughout the previous two years. The Israeli administration has denied the accusation and stated its actions are self-protection.
