Scorching conditions and raging bushfires have devastated the parched landscape of Western Australia. With mercury levels expected to persist soaring above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a major heatwave warning has been issued across a large portion of the south-west.

This situation come after this month's fires in another state, which resulted in the destruction of properties and fatalities. Intense heat alerts have also been issued for the coming days in parts of South Australia and NSW, as a ridge of atmospheric pressure shifts to the east, delivering blazing sunshine to much of the region.

The combination of tinder-dry vegetation and unbroken heat presents a dangerous scenario for emergency crews.
