2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Year of the Frog Game.
While I found the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Considering a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are launching an invasion.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Amphibians have been far from new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a cult following. However, their visibility has noticeably increased in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are legitimate Frog Games.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To understand this rise, I performed a detailed review into the past five years of hoppy gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The findings tell a compelling story: a marked uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's elevated place in the public consciousness is partially visible elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the wave in gaming seems uniquely strong.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
In my opinion, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs possess natural creative potential for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and sticky tongues enable a host of unique mechanics.
Several the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year yet.
If these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be witnessing a true amphibian entertainment revival.
